Description
Parish of St. Michael the Archangel
The parish of St. Michael the Archangel has become an icon representing the town of San Miguel de Allende. No resident or visitor to whom go unnoticed. In order to rescue her from the natural decay time has caused in this building and seeking to recover the original image from the time it was built, the city government has given the task of restoring it. To better appreciate what it meant and now its building restoration, remember a little of their history. THE ORIGINAL PARISH Almost immediately to the founding of the town of San Miguel el Grande, now Allende (1555), the temple was built parish. According to a document of 1649, the church of San Miguel el Grande collapsed after a serious deterioration. By 1680 and 1690 the parish was again in ruins, so it launched another architectural project that culminated ca. in 1709, but with a Baroque appearance, totally unlike the neo-Gothic faade that we appreciate today. It is known that in 1683 had been completed and the main body of the church, although it was damaged a wall, in addition to lacked the tower and the main altar. The play was directed by architect Marco Antonio Sobraras according to parameters established standards and style at the time: the baroque. THE CHURCH TAKES A NEW FACE Between 1880 and 1890, a master mason of the town Don Zeferino Gutierrez, (it seems be that at the request of a bishop) built a new facade according to one of the artistic styles of the time, inspired by the great works of Gothic architecture of medieval Europe. It was for this project that brought down the towers built between the s. XVII and XVIII to replace those that are preserved today. It became the cover, niches, window coral, and even the court, the bell tower clock and altars inside. For many this style has never found a balance with the colonial square that surrounds it, however, you endowed with a personality to "parish" that perhaps do not hear otherwise obtained.
